It's Me, I'm Bitches
Recently I met an e-commerce business owner that I follow on Instagram and whose products I admire. I’ve never purchased anything and the opportunity to do so presented itself at a conference I was working. My colleague and I had finally taken a couple of hours to walk the show floor and engage in the activities. As we walked to the booth I noticed a jacket I’d seen online and it was on sale! All products were discounted specifically for the show. My colleague encouraged me to ask for an additional discount as some were offering staffers a little extra incentive on top. I did and at first the business owner seemed to consider it. She walked away but when she came back, however, she said she couldn’t accommodate the request. I told her I understood, really loved the jacket and purchased it anyway. It was still a deal! However, inside I felt awful. It’s one thing if you have a barter system with someone. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. But I too am a black owned , woman business. An entrepreneur who knows the struggle is real. I constantly have to fight for my worth and here I was asking someone else for a discount. CTC, you know when you talking about the bitches who be tripping and have the audacity to do____? Today, that is me. Today, I’m bitches.
