It legitimately cracks me up when a white colleague whispers to me the inappropriate and racist comment another white colleague felt comfortable sharing with them. The hushed tone of the co-conspirator who prefaces the remark with the disclaimer that they don't mean to offend and most certainly don’t share the same view but…
Dear well-meaning and clueless colleague, I am a black woman working in corporate America. I have had to tread gently around remarks said in jest to cover up their honesty. I have been allowed to work with only the minority clients because that is where I (they) would feel most comfortable. I have hid friendships because others were uncomfortable with two black people in the office being friends. The things I have done, heard and seen would shock you and I would not whisper.
If it helps, don’t think of me as only a black woman. Think of me as unfuckablewith.
